Good Morning, U Smart Muffins

The Art 111 blog is up!

Wednesday assignment: post as a comment the icon you've chosen to work with and give a brief description of the design direction.

  1. (Rodney Pevey here; for some reason this f***ing thing just won't let me post with my name) My idea was to work with Tesla Coils (those things that make your hair stand up when you touch them; they're also in just about every mad scientist movie ever made, attached to machines and conducting lightning and such). The plan was to showcase the Coil and a few other revolutionary inventions that tend to represent scientific progress, like radios and vacuum tubes, in a big dynamic picture resembling a Drew Struzan movie poster. I still like that idea, but I've also come up with a new one that involves lightbulbs. This new concept would have a big field of burned-out lightbulbs with one off to the side shining brilliantly and the caption "One Bright Idea is Better than a Hundred Dim Ones". Please, let me know what you think.

  2. Oh, and if you're curious, don't even bother clicking on my name (Zimmy was my high school nickname) and checking out my blog. It's just something I had to create for another class and only school-related posts are allowed. Nothing interesting at all, really.

  3. Hey guys! I have way less to say about my icon so far. I have chosen the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz. I think it will be fun!

  4. Yeah Rodney I like your lightbulb idea. I was thinking of using stonehenge as my icon and using other elements in place of the stones, like cell phones and cameras and other technological objects, or making stonehenge look like a compass.

  5. Hey Mr. Polk, I hope your trip is going good! Ok so I want to use ballet shoes as my icon and have each pair in a different stance. Kinda like they're dancing across the page.

  6. hey mr. polk, im going to use the idea I talked about in class. I want to take the "rated G" icon and create it out of violent images. The message is supposed to be "what is considered acceptable, or "rated G", today?". Like, to question whether or not what the entertainment industry is calling "acceptable" is taking it too far for children, and even adults.

  7. Hey guys, this is Mitch signing on. First off let me say that I like your lightbulb idea as well Rodney. As for my icon, I'm planning on using Freddie Mercury, the late frontman of the band Queen. As for the design direction, I'm thinking of using a silhouette of Freddie Mercury, but placing images from his life and career inside the silhouette.

  8. Oh and my theme is harm is sometimes hidden behind beauty, because ballerinas kill their feet to be beautiful dancers. and i'll add things that appear beautiful but aren't around the dancing slippers.

  10. Howdy, Mr. Polk! (and all ..)

Still rolling with the paddle-wheel idea, thinking about starting with half or three-quarters of a paddle-wheel maybe in the bottom left corner of the composition, then have the portion that's showing get smaller and smaller as it moves across the page ... kind of like it IS moving .. maybe? In theory. It looks good in my head, haha.

  11. Sup class...

Welp for my icon will be cell phones. Cell phones have come a long way. In my project, I will show how cell phones have evolved into the sleek, accesible device we all cannot live without. Nothing to it but to do it! :)

  12. I am sorry I am the last person posting I could not understand how to sign in! I am still going to use the idea of the disco ball. I am simply going to use it in a photo I have manipulated on Photoshop of myself with a super disco afro. I am thinking of layering the disco ball in the photo somehow to represent the disco era.

  13. Your not the last person Joanna! I've been having trouble too. Probably because I've been trying to post from my phone.

My idea is to use the iPod. I want to show the progression from the first model to the most advanced, the iPhone. Still working out the details but that is my general plan.

  14. Joanna and Matthew, I beat both of you.

I also had trouble figuring this thing out, and I'm having more trouble with an idea.

In class I said something about doing the Mickey Mouse ears, but now I think it's lame. Sooo, I was thinking about doing a bunch of different pictures of today's icons/celebrities (specifically women) that have the rockin' bodies and making the pictures into an "average" woman's body. I guess my theme would be how so many people are influenced by celebrities and what is thought to be the perfect body/look.

OR, a thought that just came to me, having a mcdonald's burger made out of pictures of starving children to represent world hunger.

Sorry it is not a solid idea yet, I'm having trouble deciding.

Let me know what you think!
    Karli
